Calcinus elegans is a popular hermit crab species among marine aquarium enthusiasts due to its active behaviour and usefulness as a scavenger. Known for its elegant appearance and adaptability, this crab is an excellent addition to reef tanks and saltwater aquariums.
Care and Husbandry: Calcinus elegans thrives in well-established marine aquariums with stable water parameters. Maintain a temperature range of 22-26°C, salinity between 1.023-1.025 SG, and pH of 8.1-8.4. Provide moderate water flow and good filtration to ensure optimal water quality.
Feeding: This hermit crab is omnivorous and will readily consume algae, detritus, and leftover food. Supplement its diet with marine algae sheets, sinking pellets, or frozen meaty foods to ensure balanced nutrition.
Compatibility and Reef Safety: Calcinus elegans is generally peaceful and reef safe, making it suitable for community reef tanks. It coexists well with corals, fish, and other invertebrates, but avoid housing with aggressive predators that may harm it.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 30 litres is recommended to provide ample space for movement and foraging. Include live rock and sandy substrate to mimic its natural environment and offer hiding places.
Additional Notes: Hermit crabs require access to a variety of empty shells to change into as they grow. Ensure a supply of suitable shells is available in the aquarium.
