The Linckia spp. (Orange-Red) starfish are popular marine invertebrates known for their vivid orange to red coloration and distinctive star shape. These starfish are a visually appealing addition to reef and marine aquariums, offering natural algae grazing and detritus cleaning benefits.
Care Level: Moderate. Linckia spp. require stable water parameters and a well-established tank with ample live rock for grazing.
Feeding: These starfish primarily feed on biofilm, detritus, and microalgae present on live rock surfaces. Supplementary feeding with finely chopped marine foods or specialised invertebrate diets may be necessary if natural food sources are insufficient.
Compatibility and Reef Safety: Linckia spp. are generally reef safe and compatible with most peaceful tank inhabitants. However, avoid housing them with predatory fish or invertebrates that may harm them. They are best kept in mature reef systems with stable water quality.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 75 litres is recommended to provide sufficient space and stable conditions. Moderate water flow is preferred to ensure adequate oxygenation without stressing the starfish. Lighting requirements are not critical but should support healthy algae growth on live rock.
Placement: Place Linckia spp. on live rock or sandy substrates where they can graze and move freely. Avoid placing them near aggressive or territorial species.
Additional Notes: Linckia starfish are known for their ability to regenerate lost arms, but care should be taken to minimise handling and sudden environmental changes. Quarantine new specimens to prevent introducing pests or diseases.
