Palythoa caesia is a captivating soft coral species originating from the Indonesian archipelago. Known for its distinctive polyp structure and vibrant colours, this extra large specimen offers a bold addition to mature reef aquariums.
As a member of the Zoanthid family, Palythoa caesia thrives under moderate lighting conditions, ideally using LED or T5 lighting systems that replicate natural reef environments. It requires moderate water flow to ensure effective nutrient exchange without causing polyp retraction.
Placement in the aquarium should be on stable rockwork with sufficient space around neighbouring corals to prevent aggressive interactions. This species can extend its polyps significantly, so a minimum spacing of several centimetres is recommended to avoid contact with more sensitive corals.
Feeding is generally not essential as Palythoa caesia derives much of its nutrition from symbiotic zooxanthellae; however, occasional supplementation with fine particulate foods or coral-specific liquid feeds can promote growth and vibrancy.
Due to the presence of palytoxin in some Palythoa species, caution is advised when handling. Always use gloves and avoid disturbing the coral excessively.
Overall, this extra large Palythoa caesia is suitable for intermediate to advanced hobbyists who can provide stable water parameters and appropriate tank conditions.
