Dascyllus marginatus, also known as the Red Sea Domino Damselfish, is a striking and robust species native to the Red Sea. This damselfish is popular among marine aquarium enthusiasts due to its vibrant black and white patterning and relatively peaceful temperament compared to other damselfish.
Care Level: Easy to moderate care makes this species suitable for hobbyists with some marine aquarium experience.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful but can display territorial behaviour, especially in smaller tanks or when kept singly. Best housed in groups or with other semi-aggressive species. Avoid keeping with very timid or slow-moving fish.
Diet: Omnivorous. Accepts a variety of foods including high-quality flake, pellet foods, frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and marine algae. Feeding a varied diet promotes vibrant colouration and health.
Minimum Tank Size: A minimum of 75 litres (20 gallons) is recommended to provide adequate swimming space and reduce territorial aggression.
Lighting and Water Flow: Standard reef aquarium lighting and moderate water flow are suitable. This species adapts well to typical marine aquarium conditions.
Placement: Provide plenty of live rock for shelter and territory establishment. Ideal for reef tanks where it can dart among corals and rocks.
Origin: Native to the Red Sea.
Maximum Size: Typically grows up to 7 cm (approximately 2.75 inches).
Reef Safety: With Caution. While generally reef safe, they may nip at small or delicate coral polyps and invertebrates, especially if underfed or stressed.
