Goniopora spp. (Red) – Premium Small is a striking large polyp stony (LPS) coral prized for its vibrant red polyps and flowing tentacles that add dynamic movement to any reef tank. As a member of the Poritidae family, this coral requires careful husbandry to thrive in a marine aquarium.
Lighting: Moderate to high lighting is recommended to support photosynthesis while avoiding bleaching. LED or T5 lighting systems with adjustable intensity work well.
Water Flow: Provide moderate, indirect water flow to gently sway the polyps without causing tissue damage or excessive retraction.
Placement: Position in a shaded or semi-shaded area of the tank, ideally on a stable rockwork base with enough space to prevent contact with neighbouring corals. This species can be sensitive to aggressive neighbours.
Care Level: Intermediate to advanced. Goniopora spp. can be challenging due to their sensitivity to water quality and flow conditions.
Diet: While primarily photosynthetic, supplemental feeding with planktonic foods such as phytoplankton, zooplankton, or specialised coral foods can promote growth and polyp extension.
Reef Compatibility: Yes, with adequate spacing. Avoid placing near aggressive or fast-growing corals that may overshadow or sting the polyps.
Additional Notes: Maintain stable water parameters with regular testing and water changes. Monitor for signs of stress such as polyp retraction or tissue recession, adjusting flow and lighting accordingly.
