Platygyra spp. are captivating large polyp stony (LPS) corals belonging to the Faviidae family, prized for their distinctive maze-like skeletal patterns and vibrant colours. This premium medium-sized specimen is an excellent addition to established reef aquariums, offering both aesthetic appeal and moderate care requirements.
Lighting: Moderate lighting is recommended, ideally provided by LED or T5 fixtures that support coral health without causing bleaching. Avoid intense direct light to prevent stress.
Water Flow: Moderate, indirect water flow is optimal. Strong currents may damage the delicate polyps, while stagnant water can encourage detritus buildup.
Placement: Position this coral on stable rockwork in the mid to lower sections of the aquarium to balance light exposure and flow. Ensure adequate spacing from neighbouring corals to prevent aggressive interactions, as Platygyra spp. can extend sweeper tentacles.
Compatibility and Reef Safety: Suitable for reef tanks with caution; it is reef safe with adequate spacing from other corals to avoid territorial damage.
Diet: Primarily photosynthetic via symbiotic zooxanthellae, but benefits from supplemental feeding of planktonic foods such as phytoplankton, zooplankton, or specialised coral foods to promote growth and vibrancy.
Care Level: Moderate. This coral requires stable water parameters and attentive husbandry but is suitable for aquarists with some experience in LPS coral care.
Additional Notes: Maintain stable water chemistry with parameters typical for reef aquaria: temperature 24-27°C, salinity 1.023-1.025, calcium 400-450 ppm, alkalinity 8-12 dKH, and magnesium 1250-1350 ppm. Regular water changes and monitoring will support optimal health.
