Platygyra spp., commonly known as brain coral, is a captivating large polyp stony (LPS) coral prized for its intricate maze-like patterns and vibrant colours. This medium-sized specimen offers a striking addition to mature reef tanks, providing both visual interest and moderate care requirements.
Lighting: Moderate to high lighting is recommended to support the coral’s photosynthetic needs. LED or T5 lighting systems that provide a balanced spectrum work well.
Water Flow: Moderate water flow is ideal to ensure adequate nutrient delivery without causing tissue damage. Avoid strong direct currents that may stress the coral.
Placement: Position Platygyra spp. on stable rockwork in mid to lower tank regions where lighting and flow conditions are suitable. Allow sufficient space from neighbouring corals to prevent aggression, as this species can extend sweeper tentacles.
Compatibility: Reef safe with adequate spacing. Avoid placing near aggressive corals to reduce risk of stinging or tissue damage.
Feeding: While primarily photosynthetic, occasional feeding of meaty foods such as mysis shrimp or specialised coral foods can enhance growth and colouration.
Water Parameters: Maintain stable marine conditions with temperature 24-27°C, salinity 1.023-1.025, pH 8.1-8.4, and low nutrient levels.
Platygyra spp. is suitable for intermediate to advanced hobbyists due to its moderate care needs and sensitivity to water quality fluctuations. With proper husbandry, it can thrive and become a stunning focal point in your reef aquarium.
