Chromis viridis, commonly known as the Green Chromis, is a vibrant and peaceful damselfish native to the Indo-Pacific region. This species is highly regarded in the marine aquarium hobby for its striking iridescent green-blue coloration and schooling behaviour, which adds dynamic movement and colour to community reef tanks.
Care Level: Easy to moderate. Chromis viridis adapts well to captive conditions and is suitable for hobbyists with some basic marine aquarium experience.
Temperament: Peaceful and social. Best kept in groups of at least 5 individuals to encourage natural schooling behaviour. They coexist well with other peaceful fish but may show mild territoriality towards conspecifics if kept in insufficient numbers.
Diet: Omnivorous. Accepts a variety of foods including high-quality flake, frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and marine pellets. Feeding should be varied to ensure optimal health.
Minimum Tank Size: 75 litres (20 gallons) recommended to provide adequate swimming space and maintain water quality.
Reef Safety: Yes. Chromis viridis is considered reef safe and will not harm corals or invertebrates.
Lighting and Water Flow: Standard reef aquarium lighting and moderate water flow are suitable. They thrive in well-maintained reef environments with stable water parameters.
Placement: Mid to upper water column. They are active swimmers and prefer open swimming areas with some rockwork or coral for shelter.
