Favites complanata is a large, robust large polyp stony (LPS) coral belonging to the Faviidae family. Known for its distinctive, rounded corallites and vibrant colours, this coral makes an impressive centrepiece in mature reef aquariums.
Lighting: Favites complanata thrives under moderate lighting conditions. LED or T5 lighting systems providing a PAR range of 50-150 are ideal to maintain healthy growth and vibrant colouration without causing bleaching.
Water Flow: Moderate, indirect water flow is recommended to ensure proper gas exchange and to prevent sediment accumulation on the coral’s surface. Avoid strong direct currents which can cause tissue damage.
Placement: Position Favites complanata on stable rockwork in the mid to lower regions of the tank. Ensure adequate spacing from neighbouring corals to prevent aggressive interactions, as this species can extend sweeper tentacles.
Care Level: This coral is best suited to intermediate to advanced aquarists due to its specific lighting and flow requirements and moderate sensitivity to water quality fluctuations.
Diet: While Favites complanata obtains much of its nutrition from photosynthetic symbiotic zooxanthellae, supplemental feeding with meaty foods such as mysis shrimp or specialised coral foods 1-2 times per week can promote growth and vibrancy.
Reef Compatibility: Yes, with adequate spacing. Favites complanata can coexist with other peaceful corals but requires room to prevent stinging interactions.
Additional Notes: Maintain stable water parameters with calcium around 400-450 ppm, alkalinity 8-12 dKH, and magnesium 1250-1350 ppm. Regular water changes and monitoring are essential to support optimal health.
