Aplysina fistularis is a captivating soft coral sponge native to tropical marine environments. This small variant features tubular, finger-like branches with a distinctive yellow to green coloration, adding unique texture and colour to reef aquariums.
Lighting: Moderate lighting is recommended to maintain vibrant coloration without stressing the sponge. LED or T5 lighting systems that provide balanced spectrum work well.
Water Flow: Moderate water flow is ideal to ensure adequate nutrient delivery and waste removal while preventing tissue damage.
Placement: Position this sponge in a location with moderate light and flow, avoiding direct strong currents or shaded areas. Provide adequate spacing from neighbouring corals to prevent chemical or physical competition.
Diet: As a filter feeder, Aplysina fistularis absorbs dissolved organic matter and plankton from the water column. Supplementary feeding with phytoplankton or marine snow can be beneficial but is not essential in well-established reef systems.
Compatibility: Reef safe with adequate spacing. Avoid placing near aggressive corals or species known to nip at sponges.
Care Level: Moderate care requirements, suitable for hobbyists with some experience in maintaining soft corals and sponges.
Additional Notes: Maintain stable water parameters typical of reef aquariums: temperature 24-27°C, salinity 1.023-1.025, pH 8.1-8.4, and low nutrient levels. Regular water changes and good filtration support sponge health.
