Rhizophora mangle, commonly known as the Red Mangrove, is a unique addition to marine aquariums, especially refugiums and mangrove setups. This large potted plant is prized for its ability to improve water quality by absorbing excess nutrients and providing natural habitat complexity.
Lighting Requirements: Moderate to high lighting is recommended to support healthy growth. LED or T5 lighting systems that provide full-spectrum light work well.
Water Flow: Moderate water flow is ideal to prevent detritus accumulation around the roots while ensuring adequate gas exchange.
Placement: Position the plant in a shallow area of the aquarium or refugium where it can receive ample light and easy access to nutrients. Ensure the pot is stable and roots are submerged but not buried.
Care Level: Moderate. Regular trimming of aerial roots may be necessary to maintain size and prevent overcrowding.
Compatibility: Reef safe with caution. While generally compatible with most reef inhabitants, ensure adequate spacing from corals to avoid shading and competition for light.
Additional Notes: Rhizophora mangle is not a coral but is often categorised with soft corals and algae due to its ecological role in marine systems. It is an excellent natural filtration option and provides shelter for small invertebrates and fish fry.
