Scolymia australis, commonly known as the Bleeding Apple coral, is a captivating large polyp stony (LPS) coral prized for its striking colours and fleshy appearance. This Grade B small specimen offers an excellent opportunity to add vibrant colour and texture to your marine reef aquarium.
Lighting: Moderate lighting is recommended to maintain the coral’s vivid pigmentation without causing stress. LED or T5 lighting systems with a PAR range of approximately 50-100 µmol/m²/s are ideal.
Water Flow: Gentle to moderate water flow is best to ensure the coral’s polyps can extend fully without damage. Avoid strong currents that may cause tissue abrasion.
Placement: Position the coral on a stable substrate or rockwork in the lower to middle regions of the tank. Ensure adequate spacing from neighbouring corals to prevent aggressive interactions, as Scolymia australis can extend sweeper tentacles.
Care: This species is considered moderate in care level. Regular feeding of meaty foods such as mysis shrimp or specialised coral foods 1-2 times per week can promote growth and vibrancy. Maintain stable water parameters typical for reef aquaria: temperature 24-26°C, salinity 1.025, pH 8.1-8.4, and low nutrient levels.
Compatibility: Reef safe with adequate spacing. Avoid placing near fast-growing or aggressive corals that may overshadow or damage it.
