Lobophyllia spp., commonly known as Lobophyllia or Brain Coral, is a captivating large polyp stony (LPS) coral prized for its bold colours and fleshy polyps. This medium-sized specimen is suitable for marine aquarists with some experience in maintaining LPS corals.
Lighting Requirements: Moderate lighting is recommended, such as LED or T5 fixtures providing a PAR range of 50-150. Avoid intense direct light to prevent bleaching.
Water Flow: Moderate, indirect water flow is ideal to keep the coral healthy without damaging its delicate polyps.
Placement: Position Lobophyllia spp. on the substrate or lower to mid-level rockwork, ensuring ample space around it to prevent aggression towards neighbouring corals. This species can extend sweeper tentacles and may sting close neighbours.
Care Level: Moderate. Stable water parameters and regular feeding of meaty foods such as mysis shrimp or specialised coral foods will encourage growth and vibrancy.
Compatibility: Reef safe with adequate spacing. Avoid placing near aggressive corals or fast-growing SPS species.
Additional Notes: This coral benefits from occasional target feeding and stable calcium, alkalinity, and magnesium levels to support skeletal growth.
