The Bleeding Apple Coral (Acanthophyllia deshayesiana) is a captivating large polyp stony (LPS) coral prized for its fleshy, rounded form and vivid colouration. This medium-sized specimen makes a striking centrepiece in mature reef aquariums.
Lighting: Moderate lighting is recommended, such as LED or T5 fixtures providing medium PAR levels. Avoid intense direct light to prevent bleaching.
Water Flow: Low to moderate, indirect water movement is ideal to gently sway the coral’s fleshy polyps without causing tissue damage.
Placement: Position on the substrate or lower rockwork with ample space around it to prevent aggression towards neighbouring corals. This species can extend sweeper tentacles, so maintain at least 10cm clearance.
Diet: While primarily photosynthetic via symbiotic zooxanthellae, supplementary feeding with meaty foods such as mysis shrimp or specialised coral foods 1-2 times per week supports optimal growth and colour.
Reef Compatibility: Yes, with adequate spacing. The Bleeding Apple Coral is generally peaceful but requires room to avoid contact with other corals.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. Requires stable water parameters and attentive husbandry.
Regular water quality monitoring and maintaining stable calcium, alkalinity, and magnesium levels will promote healthy skeletal growth. This coral thrives in mature, well-established reef systems.
