Scorpaena spp. are a genus of scorpionfish known for their impressive camouflage and predatory behaviour. These small specimens are ideal for marine aquarists with experience in keeping venomous and cautious species.
Care Level: Due to their specialised needs and venomous spines, Scorpaena spp. require an intermediate to advanced level of care. They are not suitable for beginners.
Temperament and Compatibility: Scorpaena spp. are generally solitary and territorial. They can be aggressive towards smaller fish and invertebrates, so tank mates should be chosen carefully. Avoid housing with very small or slow-moving species.
Diet: These scorpionfish are carnivorous ambush predators. Offer a diet of live or frozen meaty foods such as small crustaceans, fish, and shrimp. Feeding should be done carefully to ensure they receive adequate nutrition.
Minimum Tank Size: A minimum aquarium size of 120 litres (approximately 30 gallons) is recommended to provide sufficient space and stable water conditions.
Lighting and Water Flow: Moderate lighting is preferred to mimic their natural shaded reef habitats. Water flow should be gentle to moderate, avoiding strong currents that may stress the fish.
Placement: Provide plenty of rockwork and hiding places to allow natural ambush behaviour and reduce stress. Ensure secure lids as these fish can jump.
Origin and Size: Exact origin and maximum size vary among species within the genus. Typically, small Scorpaena spp. reach up to 15 cm in length.
Important Note: Scorpaena spp. possess venomous spines. Handle with extreme care and use appropriate tools when maintaining the aquarium.
